Queensland's summer school holidays run 12 December 2026 – 26 January 2027. Hervey Bay's calm, shallow water makes it one of the most family-friendly beaches on the coast, with the Urangan Pier, Esplanade cafés and K'gari day trips all within easy reach.

Whale season returns July – October 2027. Humpbacks rest in the bay's calm waters from July, peaking in August and September. Vila Paus is a 5-minute drive, taxi or free shuttle from Urangan Marina, where the tours depart, and peak-season dates book out early. Some K'gari day tours combine island sights with a whale watching leg — worth asking about when you book.

Kingfisher Bay Day Visit
For a relaxed day without the 4WD tracks, or with younger children.

- DayStroll the jetty and the calm western beach, try the walking tracks behind the resort, and have lunch at the resort.
- OptionWant to see more? 4WD hire is available at Kingfisher Bay, so you can cross as a passenger and drive from there.
- AfternoonFerry back to River Heads in time for sunset drinks on the Esplanade.
Book the passenger ferry ahead; walk-on tickets must be bought before you arrive at River Heads.
Leaving from the marina instead? Some operators run boat-based K'gari day trips straight from the Great Sandy Straits Marina in Urangan, about 5 minutes from Vila Paus, with no barge or River Heads drive involved. Tasman Venture, for example, runs a full-day trip to the island's quieter west coast with swimming, snorkelling and a beach landing; in whale season it adds humpback watching. - Book ahead in school holidays: day tours and barges fill fast over summer and Easter.
- Pack for swimming: swimmers, towel, hat, sunscreen, water and insect repellent.
- Be dingo-safe: keep children within arm's reach, walk in groups and never feed wildlife.
- Whale season bonus: from July to October, keep an eye offshore from 75 Mile Beach for humpbacks.
- Times vary: operators, tides and seasons all shift the schedule, so confirm times when you book.

Boat-based day tours leave from even closer: the Great Sandy Straits Marina in Urangan is about 5 minutes from the villa. Most day tours and guided trips departing River Heads will collect guests directly from Hervey Bay accommodation, Vila Paus included, and a free shuttle transfer to River Heads is included with most tour bookings — no need to arrange your own transport.
