K'gari (Fraser Island) Day Trips from Hervey Bay

K'gari, the world's largest sand island, sits right off the coast from your Vila Paus stay — and you don't need to book a second round of accommodation to see it. Guided day tours and short overnight trips depart just 15 minutes away at River Heads, so you can tick off Lake McKenzie, the Maheno Shipwreck and 75 Mile Beach and be back at the villa in time for dinner.

Whale Watching Season Returns to Hervey Bay JULY – OCTOBER
Learn more

Every winter, thousands of humpback whales migrate to the calm, protected waters of Hervey Bay — one of Australia's most unforgettable wildlife experiences.

From July through October, visitors enjoy close encounters with playful juveniles and mothers travelling with newborn calves. Peak season falls across August and September. Some K'gari day tours combine island sights with a whale watching leg — worth asking about when you book.

See K'gari in a Day — No Extra Nights Required

Most guests picture K'gari as a multi-day 4WD expedition with island camping or resort stays booked in. It doesn't have to be. Small-group and full-day guided tours depart daily from River Heads, just a short drive from Vila Paus, and have you back on the mainland by early evening — so your Urangan accommodation is all you need to book. Prefer a slower pace? A one-night stay on the island is easy to add on without committing to a full 3-day trip.

Icons of K'gari You'll See

The world's largest sand island, K'gari packs pristine lakes, rainforest, historic shipwrecks and 75 miles of beach highway into a single day's driving. Here's what most day tours cover.

Lake McKenzie's turquoise water and white silica sand on K'gari

Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora)

K'gari's most famous perched lake — pure, rain-fed water over brilliant white silica sand. A near-mandatory swimming stop on any day trip.

The rusting remains of the Maheno Shipwreck on 75 Mile Beach, K'gari

Maheno Shipwreck

The rusting remains of a once-luxurious ocean liner, beached on 75 Mile Beach since 1935 — one of the island's most photographed sights.

75 Mile Beach

Part sandy highway, part scenic drive — this stretch of beach links most of the island's east coast landmarks together.

Surf fishing on 75 Mile Beach, K'gari (Fraser Island)

Surf Fishing

K'gari's ocean beach is a well-known surf fishing spot — some day tours build in a stop for keen anglers, or you can arrange a dedicated fishing charter.

Also Worth Your Time

  • Central Station: a boardwalk rainforest walk through towering satinay trees and ferns, following crystal-clear Wanggoolba Creek.
  • Eli Creek: float down one of the island's largest freshwater streams — bring a swimsuit and a float if you have one.
  • The Pinnacles: striking red, yellow and orange sand cliffs, coloured by natural iron deposits.
  • Wildlife spotting: keep an eye out for dingoes along the beach tracks, and for whales offshore during migration season.

Getting to K'gari from Vila Paus

Vila Paus sits on the Hervey Bay side of the Fraser Coast, which means the closest and most convenient crossing point for you is River Heads — about a 15-minute drive south of Urangan. Most day tours and guided trips departing River Heads will collect guests directly from Hervey Bay accommodation, Vila Paus included, and a free shuttle transfer to River Heads is included with most tour bookings — no need to arrange your own transport.

Most guided day tours include a free return shuttle between your Hervey Bay accommodation, River Heads and the island as part of the tour price — one of the easiest reasons to book a guided trip rather than self-driving.
